Dersin Amacı

The general aim of the Linguistics I course is to introduce the nature of language to future foreign language teachers and to enable them to have a general understanding of what language really is.

The course Linguistics is offered in two semesters: Linguistics I and Linguistics II, which are offered in Fall and Spring semesters successively. The present course, Linguistics I, is a preliminary course for the introduction of the field of linguistics, in which several important selected topics are covered, including basic concepts of linguistic analysis; concepts related to the nature, structure and use of language with the help of awareness-raising, incorrect analysis of language students' data, case study and comparative native and foreign language analysis; the components of language as a system; linguistic competence and performance, sub-branches of linguistics, types of grammar, universals of language, linguistic creativity, sign languages, artificial languages and communication between living things; research on brain and language, lateralization and handedness, language evolution, human language functioning patterns, language use and language disorders (e.g. simultaneous listening test, split brain, WADA test); phonetics, acoustic, auditory and articulatory phonetics, speech organs, phonemes, consonants and vowels, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); phonology, sound samples, consonant clusters, consonant letters; morphology, morphemes, morphological typology, how new words are formed, lexical categories (parts of speech); syntax, types of syntactic structures, types of sentences and clauses, phrases, grammaticality judgments and ambiguity.
