The course seeks to define the concept of geopolitics, and examine the major theories on and approaches to geopolitics. It also examines the geopolitical position of Turkey from past to today, through a consideration of the importance of Turkey´s new geopolitical position. In this context, it scrutinizes alternative foreign policy strategies available before Turkey in this new geopolitical reality.
The course will first start with a theoretical examination of the concept of political geography and the characteristics of geopolitics. Second, the current developments in the international system and foreign policies of several countries will be analyzed from a geopolitical perspective. In conducting the course, students will be encouraged to do extensive research and the method of instruction will be based on interactive participation of students in class dicussions.
