Dersin Amacı

To explain and introduce seismotectonic features of the strike-slip faults, which cause earthquake hazard for a number of highly populated and developed regions on the Earth including Marmara Region of Turkey, and of the two strike-slip fault systems (North and East Anatolian Fault Zones) produced devastating earthquakes in Turkey to the graduate students studying topics directly or indirectly related with Earth Sciences. The fact that North Anatolian Fault Zone passes close to the main campus of Sakarya University, caused the depression that host Sapanca Lake and produced 1999 İzmit earthquake could be introduced as a necessity for this graduate course.

Global distribution, classification, terminology, structural-geometrical properties, seismicity and segmentation of the strike-slip faults; Riedel experiment and deformation ellipsoid; Tectonic geomorphology of the strike-slip faults; Properties of the continental scale strike-slip faults in depth domain; Converging and diverging strike-slip tectonics; Trancurrent, transform and wrench faults; Secondary faultings and sedimentary basins developing along the strike-slip faults; Earthquake rupture nucleation, propagation and arrest and focal mechanisms along the strike-slip faults; Structural-geometrical properties, segmentation and seismicity of the North and East Anatolian Fault Zones.
