Dersin Amacı

The primary objective of ELT 202 American Literature is to familiarize the students with the leading names of American Literature, and in this way, help them acquire an overall appreciation of the field. Thanks to the course, the students will value subjective viewspoints held while reading literary pieces and gain the skill of textual analysis. By having a look at various reading experiences through separate perspectives, they contsruct an understanding of the nature of reading.

Dersin İçeriği

The present course is a continuation of ELT 201 – English Literature. It’s designed to familiarize students with the milestones of American Literature through a close analysis of selected pieces ranging from novel to poetry. Comparing to other similar courses, it puts more emphasis on the field of literature itself rather than history of it. The reading materials are composed of works not only from different genres but also from different historical periods, therefore history is not excluded but it is inserted into the materials. The students are encouraged to produce their own interpretations of the reading experience.
The pieces are intentionally selected to provoke questioning and lateral thinking, which are the distinctive abilities of human beings though they are deliberately knocked out of the individuals attempting to gain a foothold in a vicious circle. Therefore, the course with such a social mission gets you to question even the mostly well-accepted norms dictated by the mainstream. Furthermore, you are also invited to approach the materials technically and come up with some different –in a way professional- perspectives.
