Dersin Amacı | Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to; -Identify and discuss the role of coursebooks in ELT -State and apply approaches to evaluation: External, Internal, and Overall Evaluation -Analyze, evaluate, and select coursebooks -Evaluate materials for ELT -Get familiar with and apply guidelines for evaluation -Specify the aims and analyze the learning/teaching situation and needs -Evaluate the make-up of the coursebook package and the organization of coursebooks -Evaluate the language content of coursebooks -Evaluate the four skills in coursebooks -Decide on a checklist -Evaluate teachers’ books and teaching aids -Present an overall evaluation of a coursebook |
Dersin İçeriği | This course focuses on the evaluation and selection of coursebooks that will be most suitable for English as a second or foreign language purposes. Accordingly, this course is primarily designed to enable prospective teachers of English to learn the criteria they should take into consideration when choosing a coursebook, to do their own evaluation and selection of the materials. The present course, therefore, aims to provide the underlying principles and guidelines regarding the evaluation criteria as well. Students will be provided with many opportunities to bridge the theory and practice through contemporary coursebook evaluation sessions where they will experience the evaluation and selection of coursebooks suitable for different contexts, age groups, and language levels over these criteria. Inspection of the course books from the physical, educational, visual design, and language expression features and standards that should be in the course book; the appropriateness of the content of textbooks, the content of some existing textbooks, language, suitability to student level, format, appeal, contribution to meaningful learning, ease of use in teaching, etc. will be dealt as well.
