Dersin İçeriği

The present course is designed to develop reading skills of the freshmen students. This course primarily follows a step-by-step approach which enables students enhance their academic reading skills and strategies as well as their academic and background knowledge, vocabulary building, and critical thinking skills.

The course provides students with strategies that will help them learn to skim, scan, predict, map, and formulate questions before they begin to read. Moreover, they learn to identify main ideas as well as supporting details, progressing from the “literal” to “inferential” meanings. They also learn to uncover what is beneath the surface of a reading passage and are led to interpret the many layers of meaning in  a text. Students are also given opportunities to see and use vocabulary in many ways: guessing words in context, identifying synonyms, recognizing idioms, and practicing word forms. At the same time, they have ample practice in identifying roots and parts of words, recognizing collocations, and understanding connotations. They are also encouraged to practice and master a variety of note-taking skills for reading, such as highlighting, annotating, paraphrasing, summarizing, and outlining. Most importantly, students learn how to read between the lines, make inferences, draw conclusions, make connections, evaluate, and synthesize information from various sources.
