| Dersin Amacı | The goal of this course to explain how Iraqi society evolved in response to a number of domestic, regional, and international challenges in the past century |
| Dersin İçeriği | This course covers selective topics in the History of Modern Iraq. Each class will begin with a discussion of a contemporary issue in history of Iraq. The challenge of tribalism to nation-building process during the Hashemite kingdom will be discussed first. The communist and nationalist had different and opposing discourses in Iraq which will be explained by looking at their respective views on Abdulkarim Qasim´s coup of 1958 and that of Abdul salam Arif. Bathist´s ideology and stand on foreign relations will be explained in Baker era. Saddam´s approach to Iraq´s foreign relations will be discussed by looking at selective cases such as Arab-Israeli conflict, Iraq- Iran war1980 -1988, and first Gulf war in the last section. Finally, during the 1980s-1990s, Islamism as an ideology began to dominate Iraqi politics and this has manifested in Ikhwan and Islamic Dawa Party. |
