Course Objective The learning objective of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge to students seeking to specialize in the foreign policy of the United States that has shaped the contemporary international politics.
Course Content The course examines several topics relevant to American foreign policy
- American foreign policy tradition;
- continuity and change in foreign policy;
- emergence of the United States in world politics;
- the compatibility of the post-World War II interventionist American foreign policy with the isolationist Monroe doctrine;
- the making of presidential doctrines on foreign policy;
- the influence of the Congress, interest groups, public opinion, foreign policy bureaucracy, president and other actors in the making of American foreign policy;
- the influence of post-Cold War developments on American foreign policy;
- the American position on the debates concerning the emergence of a new international system;
- the effect of the post-9/11 developmentw on America´s role in the world, with special reference to growing American interventionism.
